Your Company Has a Plan. Do You?
What do you do when your personal goals and your company’s goals… just don’t line up anymore?
This question came from a listener (who wanted to remain anonymous), but honestly? I’ve lived this. Multiple times.
So let me walk you through a moment in my journey and what I learned that might help you right now.
I wear a lot of hats whether that’s as an engineer, speaker, coach, podcast host but flash back to when I first started working and had my sights set on where I wanted to before I ever even thought of being an entrepreneur.
After college, I worked in an Early Career rotational program in Albuquerque, NM for a Fortune 500 company.. Shout out to the best green chile breakfast burritos I’ve ever had!
I knew I wanted to pivot into research and development long term.
But the company (mainly my manager) had different plans for me.
They wanted me to lead a team on night shift for my fourth and final rotation despite the fact that there was an open role that would help with my long-term goals for working in R&D.
How did I know it would help?
I had connected with people at corporate (S/O to networking) about what I needed to make the move and they said that the role was the liaison between corporate and the site and would be perfect way to learn the ropes
So I had a choice: stay put and hope things would change, or take ownership of my own path.
I chose me.
I did end up working as a night shift supervisor for 30 manufacturing technicians for a few months and they were great and I loved the company and the team but ultimately wasn’t getting me where I wanted to go
I leaned into my exit strategy and found a new role more aligned with my long-term vision and also brought me back to St. Louis with relocation fully paid for!
Here’s the truth:
✅ Companies will always do what’s in their best interest.
✅ You should too.
✅ Your career goals are valid, even if they don’t fit someone else’s plan for you.
Whether it’s travel, new challenges, or just not working 4 p.m. to 4 a.m., your preferences matter. And you’re allowed to pivot. Just make sure it’s intentional.
Here’s the challenge for this week:
Ask yourself, “Is what I’m doing right now helping me get to where I want to be?”
If the answer is no, it might be time to move, speak up, or ask better questions. That doesn’t always mean quitting.
Sometimes it means strategic networking.
Sometimes it means playing the long game. But it always means choosing yourself over the company
