Episode 125 w/ Paul Faronbi

Leading as a Gen Z Professional
You’re probably reading this from one of 2 main perspectives.
You are a Gen Z professional and are curious about what I have to say about how to lead effectively.
You are not Gen Z and you are curious about what I’m telling Gen Z about how to lead effectively
Welcome to both view points that are basically the same and get ready for my short insight on how to lead as a Gen Z professional
I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating because leaders are repeaters.
Leadership is influence! It’s not a title as much as so many people want to believe.
There are several people who have the leadership title but the people they lead are looking for anyway to undercut or do less than what’s being asked of them.
This is where leading as Gen Z comes in because you don’t need a title to start leading.
Think about what you bring to the table.
Whether that’s being a digital native, love for AI, desire for meaningful work, having a life outside of work to name a few. All really important things that are becoming more prevalent.
Gone are the days where people live to work. We work to live and that’s something that Gen Z has made more common and I highly respect it despite the fact that I basically have 3 different jobs..
But here’s where as Gen Z, you need to be careful.
In order to gain influence and lead properly, you must be a good listener and understand the values and goals of your leader and your organization.
You can’t come in trying to change everything if you haven’t done any listening first.
LISTEN, LEARN, then LEAD
It’s much easier to have someone be receptive to your perspective when you hear them out and respect the knowledge and experiences they have.
Respect isn’t the same as agreement. You can hear someone out and still choose to go in a different direction
You also need to give respect to gain respect.
Yes, I hear you. It’s a 2-way street but someone has to go first and as the new kids, most likely it needs to be you.
