Good vs. Incredible

I've been learning a tough lesson lately: just because something is “good” doesn’t mean it’s good for me.
Let me explain…
Between my full-time engineering job, speaking, coaching, and podcasting, my plate stays pretty full. If I tried to do everything at 100% all the time, I’d completely burn out. So instead, I operate in seasons.
In my engineering career, I’ve had to be ultra-intentional. I’ve passed on a lot of “good” opportunities to make space for great ones, and I’ve also made short-term sacrifices for long-term aspirations.
I know what you might be thinking:
“Paul, how do you actually tell the difference between good and great?”
Honestly? Only you can answer that for yourself. But from what I’ve seen hosting my podcast, way too many people build a life based on what other people expect of them, completely ignoring their own strengths and passions.
To me:
The "Good" path is safe. It’s comfortable, and nobody will ever question you for taking it.
The "Great" (and INCREDIBLE) path requires stepping out of autopilot. It’s pursuing what actually lights you up—even when you aren't sure if anyone else is going to get it or support it.
That’s where the magic actually happens.
I’ve had to apply this exact same rule to podcasting. I’m super grateful to get tons of guest applications for the show, and honestly, most of them are “good.” But if they don’t align with where I’m going, I have to say no.
My assistant and I have gotten really intentional about filtering these requests. If a guest doesn't directly support the core mission, empowering the next generation in STEM to Be Incredible, it’s a pass.
Which brings me to a major shift...

⏱️TL;DR Just because an opportunity is “good” doesn’t mean it’s right for you—and learning to say no to the safe path is usually the only way to make space for the truly incredible stuff. That exact mindset is why, after 130+ episodes, IncrediPaul Leadership is officially wrapping up to make room for the brand-new Be Incredible Podcast. To go out with a bang, the final episode features burnout expert Jimmy Burroughes sharing how high-performing leaders can stop spinning too many plates and step into what’s next.
