Before You Lead, Learn to Listen.
I believe that effective leadership starts with listening.
Why is it important to listen?
What happens when we don’t listen?
Is listening really that important?
There are many things that are easier said than done, but I think Listening is near the top of the list if not THE top of the list. We all should have heard it before but there lies the problem… were we truly listening?
As someone who’s a podcaster as well as a certified coach, listening is critical to do my job well but I would argue it’s just as critical in leadership…
However, we don’t always see the downfall of poor listening until later so maybe it’s harder to see the correlation.
THREE KEY REASONS TO LISTEN
It’s important to listen because this is the only way to learn.
You can’t learn if you’re always the one doing the talking and plus no one likes a know-it-all who exerts the knowledge on others without listening.
When we don’t listen, we lose people almost instantly.
How many times have you asked a question or said something and someone says something unrelated and you could instantly tell they weren’t listening? Not very engaging is it?
If you don’t care about being a know-it-all, have learned everything, and don’t mind losing people then by all means please continue to NOT listen because that’s the result you’re going to get. Also, if you don’t listen to others, how can you expect them to listen to you?
Seems a little hypocritical right?
In this week’s episode, I tell a story about when I was in a previous job and was taught the model of Listening, Learning, and then leading. I had heard it in some cases but not put so succinctly before
And no, this lesson, didn’t come from John Maxwell or someone who claims to be a leadership expert.
It came from a Union Employee because I took the time to listen to him and he affirmed my approach to leadership as well.
So what are you waiting for?
Check out this episode and let me know your thoughts!
TL;DR:
Listening is the only way to learn. Not listening makes you lose people. And if you want someone to listen to you, you have to listen to them first! Also, check out this week’s episode where I dive deeper into the framework of how Listening is the foundation of Leadership.
