CAN YOU LEAD AS AN INTROVERT?

I won’t belabor the initial question

YES

You can lead as an introvert, and I would argue that it’s probably easier to be an effective leader as an introvert than it is as an extrovert.

Why do I say that?

Well, leadership is people focused and it’s harder to be people focused if you’re the one doing all the talking. A key part to leadership is listening to people. But make sure that you’re listening to understand and not just to respond.

How can you tell if you’re listening to respond or listening understand?

SILENCE or maybe the lack thereof…

If there’s no silence between when someone finishes a thought, and when you start talking, then most likely you didn’t hear everything that was said.

I’m not saying take 5 seconds to respond. Even half a second can be enough to process things, but don’t jump straight into talking. I think this can be harder for an extrovert than an introvert.

You may be wondering. Paul, are you an introvert or an extrovert? Or maybe you’re already assuming I’m an extrovert from what I do with podcasting, speaking, and being in front of audiences.

I’m actually neither…

I’m an ambivert that leans more introverted but really depends on the situation. I’ve learned when to be extroverted but I recharge the most when I’m by myself.

In this episode, I go a little be deeper telling the story of IncrediPaul and also share briefly about how to be an effective introverted leader which is a majority of us in STEM. You don’t want to miss it!
