Communicating Effectively
Let’s be real..
We in STEM don’t have the best track record of being great communicators.
Either we’re told we're too detailed or other times people don't even know what we’re talking about.
So how do we get around this to be more effective communicators?
The first step to take is to KNOW your audience. It’s simple, but it speaks volumes whether your audience is one familiar with your work or brand new to it.
Next step is to not make ANY assumptions. Even if your audience is familiar with a specific topic, they probably aren’t as close to it as you are and it’s important that you’re taking the time to present it in a way that’s digestible and slow things down
Last step I’ll discuss is to leave room for questions while you’re presenting as much as you can..
I know it’s tempting to just get through all the material of whatever you prepared. I know you don’t really want to be giving this presentation anyway, but stop yourself from doing this.
Why?
Because you’ll save yourself a lot of headache of continuing on when everyone has completely checked out because they no longer understand or have a burning question.
It can also help you tailor your material better to your audience and you may end up talking less!
Trust me, I know it’s a work in progress and it can seem tedious, but the main thing to remember is if you can’t communicate effectively to stakeholders whether internal or external, your work isn’t going to go very far.
In this episode I talk a lot about communication and owning your career with Kristen Noelle. She’s worked with her fair share of people in STEM with speaking and communication. She shares her story and transitions from living internationally and coming back to USA that you won’t want to miss!
