EMPOWERING LEADERSHIP
Only 2 more weeks until new episodes of the show are back
I know y’all have been anxiously waiting..
But this is also a great opportunity to go through the backlog of 131 episodes as well!
Today I want to take the time to talk about empowering leadership
What does it look like to be an empowering leader?
It simple but not necessarily easy, and for me that means giving people the tools to succeed and then getting out of the way.
It’s really easy to get into micromanaging and there can be times for this if someone is new to their career or job but in most cases it’s overkill and frustrating to both parties.
It can cause people to disengage and check out when they’re not giving the autonomy and tools to be successful. Don’t get me wrong, some people don’t mind or do want some micromanaging, but this shouldn’t be the default. There’s no growth or development in someone telling you exactly what to do.
When I’m leading, I try my best to give direction and allow the people to succeed or to fail as well. Allowing people the opportunity to fail is something I’m consistently working on because I’m a recovering perfectionist and I rather things be done right the first time. What I’ve been learning is that we learn way more from our failures or mistakes than we do from our successes.
Being prescriptive is one thing, but doing everything whether it’s when I’ve lead a team at W2 job, a nonprofit, student organization, or a team building activity, sometimes you’ve just got to let go and see what happens.
TL:DR?
Don’t smother your people or the people you work with. Give them resources or tools and just get out of the way.
You’ll be surprised at what people can do when you give them the opportunity.
I’m also highlighting my episode from The Drop In CEO Podcast with Host Deb Coviello. I talk about my leadership journey and what inspires me to keep going. Click the YouTube link or the Spotify link below but you can find wherever you stream podcasts.
