Focusing on Solutions

Are you focusing on problems?
Or are you focusing on solutions?

It feels natural to focus on the problems.
You might even think, how else am I going to solve anything if I don’t look at what’s wrong?

But here’s the truth.
You can acknowledge the problem without getting stuck in it.

Because when all your energy goes toward what’s broken, your brain starts looping. You spiral. You feel stuck. And before long, the problem starts feeling bigger than it actually is.

When you focus on solutions, your mind starts to expand instead of contract. You start asking what can I do right now? instead of why isn’t this working?

That’s how progress happens.

This lesson hit me hard after reading one of the most impactful books I’ve come across in the last five years called Relentless Solution Focus.
I read it about three years ago, and I still go back to it often. I even had the authors on my podcast because their message is that powerful.

The idea is simple but game-changing.
Focus on what’s going well, not just on what’s wrong.
Focus on the next small action that moves you forward.

As someone who’s a recovering perfectionist, this has been life-changing. I’ve learned to celebrate small wins, and honestly, most of my “small” wins weren’t that small after all.

As leaders, especially in STEM, it’s easy to fixate on data, mistakes, or the one thing that didn’t go right. But leadership isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. It’s about possibility.

When we shift from a problem mindset to a possibilities mindset, we create space for creativity, confidence, and growth.

So this week, try this.
Catch yourself when you’re dwelling on the problem, and instead ask what’s one thing I can do right now to move closer to a solution?

You might be surprised how much lighter and more capable you feel.

This week’s episode is part 2 of the crossover with Science With Impact Podcast with host Vanessa Rosa, Ph.D.

TL;DR:
Focusing on problems keeps you stuck. Focusing on solutions keeps you moving. Celebrate small wins, take action, and lead with a mindset of possibility, not perfection.
