Navigating Your Career in STEM

Episode 123 w/ Paul Faronbi

Check out last week’s newsletter: Unlocking Leadership Potential

When it comes to your career, you’re the one that’s going to care the most about it.

No boss, coworker, friend, or even mentor will care as much you do about your career

Why?

Because it’s yours and you have to take ownership of it to make it truly yours

Coaching over the last 5+ years has shown me that most people take years before they start to be intentional about their career if they ever do…

It’s easy to just let things happen and not think about where you want to go.

But guess what happens?

You’ll often find yourself living someone else’s dream or worse living a nightmare. It takes some introspection to understand what you want but what is equally important is what you don’t want to do. Also, another key to your career is that just because you’ve been doing something doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it.

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard. I was only going to be here a year or a couple of years and then boom 15, 20, sometimes 30 years they’re still in the same place. There’s definitely been more of a shift in last few years with people leaving jobs quickly, but even in that case, you need to understand what you’re moving towards. As someone who worked for 5 different billion dollar organizations over the last 10 years, there were specific reasons why I joined and left an organization due to my values, goals, leadership and not just leaving to get paid more…

Getting paid more is great, but you realize quickly that mo’ money can lead to mo’ problems, so be careful what you say yes to.
