UNLOCKING LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL

Have you wondered a key way to unlock leadership potential?

It’s simpler than you’d think but can also be very difficult in execution..

It starts by talking less and listening a lot more.

It almost sounds too easy… Can listening more really unlock leadership potential?

Well let’s put it to the test. What’s the best way to understand a situation? You can’t really do that without listening first and making sure you’re listening to understand not just respond. If you interject too quickly, you may miss out on some key information that could help you make a better decision.

For me, listening is a skill that I’ve been very intentional about cultivating and fortunately I get a lot of practice from leading a nonprofit, being an senior engineering professional, coaching and podcasting.

When I talk with people about listening, the thing that comes up the most is concerns about not getting heard when you’re done listening to others and trying to add feedback.

I completely understand.. just because you’re practicing listening skills doesn’t mean that others will reciprocate when you have something important to say, so how do you get around that?

First thing is to realize that not every situation is the same and people are different as well. If this is someone that is known to interrupt or not listen, then you need to come into the conversation ready to defend and stand your ground while you’re speaking and ask them not to interrupt. Some people can’t help themselves, but if you pre-warn them, it could make a big difference. If they still interrupt you, hold your boundary and stop them.

Boundaries are only as good as when they’re enforced. It may feel awkward or “mean” to do it but you can’t keep getting talked over when you’ve already set the tone. Reach out to a coach for your specific situation but hopefully this is a good place to start!

For most of us, it’s the opposite problem of not wanting our thoughts to slip away from us or being excited about jumping to help. Part of personal growth is understanding when we need to be quiet as much as it is learning to speak up more.

I talk with the Leader’s Coach and recent Author Lynn Wong about this and so much more in this week’s episode. Stream now by clicking below button or YouTube link.
